- In 1860 he is HOH living with his mother (aged 41, as "Amanda,") and younger brother Norbert. There is also a "Mary," born in Missouri, aged 20, living with them, and a child "Mary", aged 1/12 (census was taken in July): was this a first wife?
He served in LeGardeur's Company of the Orleans Guard Battery, a Light Artillery unit. This unit fought at Farmington in 1863, in Tennessee at Chickamauga in 1863, and later at the defense of Charleston in 1865.
Here are his entries in Booth:
Pitard, A., __ Capt. Guyol's Co. (Orleans Arty.) La. Arty. On Roll dated New Orleans, La., Nov.
25, 1861, Absent; delinquent.
Pitard, A., Pvt. Capt. Le Gardeur Jr.'s Co. (Orleans Grd. Batty.) La. Light Arty. On Roll not
dated, ordered into the service of the State of Louisiana. On Report dated Nov. 23, 1861, New
Orleans, La., Present on parade.
He seems to have been the first Pitard to start in the hardware business. In 1857, the city directory just shows one entry. 11 Rampart here is the employer's address; the last is the residence. This must be Arthur Pitard. This is the first record of this occupation for the Pitards.
Pitard , Archer . . . hardware . . . 11 Rampart, n New Basin . . . d. Franklin n.
The fullest picture of the family is on the 1880 census, but, oddly, Blanche does not appear there.
In the 1881 City Directory he is living at 17 S. Derbigny, and is listed as a partner in In the hardware store, described as "‘Importers and Dealers in Hardware, Grates, Paints, Oils, Window Glass, Wall Paper, etc.,' at 207 Canal St. n. Rampart Street."
In 1900 he is living right next to his daughter's household, and the census says that both of his parents were born in France. This is the only place I've seen this about his parents. [2]
